Bittersweet Villanelle

How softly was your vanity pulled down?
When all of what you knew became as dust;
Among these silver pools I let you drown.

You thought yourself as wise with all renown,
But gravely now the thorns begin to rust;
How softly was your vanity pulled down?

When all your deathless stares in memory frown
Without a treasured kiss I lose my lust,
Among these silver pools I let you drown.

Your touch is something like a hollow town
That treats into its halls a broken bust,
How softly was your vanity pulled down?

My heart still wears its sorrow like a gown
It drags along the floor with ugly thrust
Among these silver pools I let you drown.

But as the fading sky brings Autumn in to brown
The air about my age, with sins adjust
How softly was your vanity pulled down?
Among these silver pools I let you drown.
